Blog Post #5 Walking Well
๐ Checklist for Walking Well ๐
Using the principles of the Alexander technique can help you to move and walk with greater awareness, ease, and efficiency. Whether you're walking in the park, down the street, or anywhere else, this guide will help you make the most of each step you take. Using the tips below will enhance your body awareness and help you to stay present with your stride.
โ Allow your neck to be free and encourage the crown of your head to release upwards.
โ Let your back lengthen and widen with each breath and each step.
โ Do you feel a sense of tightness or are you compressing your hip joint each time your leg bends? If you are overstriding you may feel a โpull and twistโ in your low back. (Shorten your gait)
โ Are you aware of your breathing?
โ Are your ankles free as they move or do they feel tight and stiff?
โ What are your knees doing? Allow them to move freely over your toes rather than at an angle.
โ Let your body lengthen upwards each time you move.
โ Direct your knee to go forwards, away from your hip joints as they bend, and away from each other so they donโt pull inwards.
โ While sending your spine up, direct your heels to go down towards the floor.
โ Allow your legs to unravel out of your low back and toward your knees with each step.
โ Let your whole foot meet the ground and, if you have weak ankles, notice if your big toe is making contact with the ground.
โ Let your arms move freely and naturally. Allow them to swing in a cross pattern with your gait.
